Hey there sweet readers!
As you all know, I live in an basement apartment and although it is spacious, it has it's limitations on storage space. I find using the spaces anywhere and everywhere was working for a while. Beware though it may become messy & cluttered (which is my case now). Which also leads me to a new project that will soon go underway, more about that later.
Your all probably sitting there maybe in the same situation or are heading in that direction. You have no idea where to begin, or how to even go about it. Well I may have 10 ways just for you, to help prevent that from happening or helping you fix it.
I myself struggle sometimes with not enough storage and too much stuff. These simple steps, will help you get your home back in a clean, organized and manageable state. Where you open those doors with a huge smile on your face.
Now let's get to it shall we?
Step 1: Evaluate your space.
Take a look at what you have & what you are working with. Write down a game plan, picture in your mind what you want or draw it out. What do you want the finished result to be?
Step 2: Take everything out & purge!
Let's take it all out, start by organizing it into groups, for example; too keep. too donate, to giveaway, throw out, put in another spot etc. Really purge and think about what you REALLY need in the end. If you haven't used it in 6 months to a year toss/donate it. If you know someone who could use it give it to them! (as long as it's in good condition).
I know this can be a scary step for some but don't worry you will be glad you did. note: is may look like a disaster, BUT it always gets worse before it gets better right?
Step 3: Figure out what you need.
Now here is the time to re-evaluate and see what you need to organize your space. Make a list, take note of how much is going back in. Some great storage options are;
- plastic bins
- shoe boxes
- decorative boxes
- magazine holders
- Hanging racks
Anything you can use to store while a little pretty too are what your going to need.
Step 4: Get your supplies.
Let's go and get what we need! Go to your local hardware, craft store, Walmart etc. Remember you can do this on a budget too, check out some thrift stores, shop around at home, use what you have, ask if your friends/family have any extras they can give to you etc.
Step 5: Now let's bin it!
Now to get all your items organized, use all the supplies you bought and put everything your keeping away in its new "proper" place. Throw out your toss pile and get your donate pile ready & in your car to give away.
Step 6: Let's stack!
Put all your bins, baskets, holders away on your shelves. Put it in places you can find & take it out easily. Let's make this as painless and easy as possible. So then you'll keep it neat, tidy and organized for long to come.
Step 7: Label it.
One of the best ways to make any space feel organized, functional and of course pretty. Is...LABELS! Yay!
Let's print off our labels. you can either write or type what's in each box and then stick on the box. You can even put it in a protector pack to keep it from the elements. Remember write everything that's in the box on the label to make it easy for you to find exactly what your looking for.
There may be something in store for you if you click that button. I have made some pretty labels for you to print off! They are hiding in my library just for you, click that button, get the password and your in!
Step 8: Stand & Stare.
You have your newly organized space, labeled and all. YES!
Now stand, stare, admire it & love it. You are going to smile every time you open the door. It will feel so much lighter & functional and you'll probably wonder why it took you so long to do something so simple (always the case right? I know I'm guilty of it). After making a plan, writing it down, putting it into action and now admiring it. I'd say it was pretty successful don't you?
Bonus Step 9: To remember
Don't be afraid of color, or trying something different. Use your space the way it works for YOU not what it's "supposed" to be used for. This day & age we should really try think outside the box. They're really are no rules (we're rebels aren't we?) & have fun with it!
note: try something new, use something you wouldn't normally use, thinking outside the "storage" box, paint the room a bright color etc.
Bonus Step 10: Last but not least
Follow your plan, if you stray a bit because something doesn't work out that's ok go with it. For the most part though stick to it, then you will make sure to use it like that for time to come. Even make a game plan for how your going to use your new space. To make sure you keep it that way, something you can turn back to. Lastly Enjoy it!!! Enjoy your space and pat yourself on the back, because you did it.
Yay side skip, with streamers and horns, we finished! That wasn't too bad, was it? Now it's time for the next project HA!
Don't forget to get your pretty labels, so you can go on a labeling frenzy and then feel so organized everywhere! There hiding in the library so click that button, get the password and your in!
That was fun! These 10 steps will help you punch out that newly organized space in no time and you'll wonder why it took you so long. I have a few organizing projects up my sleeve, that I want to share with you. I'm going to be using these steps myself, I find it helps me punch out my projects even faster. Doesn't organizing rock? It always makes me appreciate my home that much more.
Do you have steps you follow? Do you have any I missed? Let me know in the comments below, I always love hearing from you!
